Arrive in Iceland and head to a lesser known highlands waterfall. Spend the night in a hotel with views of the volcano Hekla and a custom outdoor hot tub.
After breakfast at the hotel, we will put the 4x4 to use and head to Landmannalaugar to hike and photograph the rhyolite mountains and lava fields. In the evening we'll soak in the natural hot springs, hope for a clear night and the appearance of the aurora. Showers and full bathrooms will be available at this established campground.
We'll head out further into the highlands, exploring the dramatic landscape. We'll make several stops, including the largest volocanic canyon in the world, Eldgja. We will end the day at Jokulsarlon where we will camp next to the glacial lagoon with an incredible view to fall asleep and wake up to.
After packing up camp, we'll head to the beach, where icebergs will litter the black sand. Once we leave the beach, we'll make a stop by a glacial tongue of the largest glacier in Europe, Vatnajokull. Here you we will walk along the side of the glacier and get a great up close view of the ice and crevasses. After departing the glacier, we'll stop by Fjadrargljufur canyon for some hiking and continued photography opportunties. Next we'll drive across a large glacial floodplain before arriving in the small town of Vik, and it's picturesque beach (and iconic red roofed church that sits above the town. Finally, we'll arrive at the famous Skogafoss waterfall, where we'll setup camp right next to the falls. This is an established campground and showers will be available.
Today we will drive into Thorsmork (yes, that Thor), a hikers paradise. We will be surrounded by glacier covered volcano's, canyons and rivers. It is one of the most scenic spots in all of Iceland. During September, the elusive arctic fox begins to come down from their summer homes high up in the hills and we will hopefully be able to see and photograph these curious and playful animals. While camping in Thorsmork, we'll have the opportunity to go on several hikes into canyons and along ridgelines providing incredible views.
After several nights of camping, we'll head to a local farm with a small hotel. Here we will have access to the unique Icelandic horses (we'll have numerous opportunties to photograph horses throughout the tour - they are literally everywhere).
Departing the farm, we'll head back into the highlands where we will setup camp, hike and visit more dramatic lesser known Icelandic spots.
In the morning, we'll continue to explore the highlands before making our way to Reykjavik for the night.
A full day to explore the city and explore it's culture, buildings and art. In the evening we'll have a nice dinner and the opportunity (if you would like) to participate in the Runtur, the famous late night pub crawl that takes places each Friday and Saturday night in Reykjavik.
We'll head to the airport and fly home, with great memories and hundreds or thousands of photos.
